Color Mixing Beach Ball Activity Mixing colors is one of those basic art concepts that children of all ages love. There is something magical about taking two colors and creating a new one and this Color Mixing Beach Ball is the perfect activity to demonstrate this.
Materials Needed:
- “Mouse Paint” by Ellen Stoll Walsh
- Red, yellow, and blue washable Crayola paint
- Paintbrushes
- Paper plates
- Black tape or a black marker
- 1) If you have the story “Mouse Paint” by Ellen Stoll Walsh you can introduce this color mixing activity by reading this wonderful story. This book is available at all public libraries. If you do not have access to this fantastic book, you can watch it on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF_CAsEEF4I
- 2) After listening to this story, divide a paper plate into sixths using black tape or a black marker.
- 3) Explain to your kids that there are three main colors on a color wheel that CANNOT be made by mixing any other colors. Those colors are called the Primary Colors (red, yellow and blue).
- 4) After explaining what primary colors are, help your child add the correct primary color paints to the compartments show in the first image above.
- 5) Combine these colors in the adjacent boxes. This is such a fun way for kids to discover how to make secondary colors (orange, green, and purple).
- a) Mix equal parts of yellow and red to make orange in the triangle between yellow and red.
- b) Next, mix equal parts of red and blue to make purple in the triangle between these colors.
- c) Mix yellow and blue to make
- green in between these two primary colors.
- 6) Then let your beachball dry until it is ready for everyone to admire.
